NOVEL ENTHUSIASM: First Buyer and First Reader

What a great thing to be an author, especially if you're a fresh new author? As I am as a fresh new author, the great thing is if I have enthusiastic readers who are eagerly wanting to read my book.

Both pictures above were sent last weekend by Henny from Jakarta, Indonesia. She was an ex-student of the online writing course I managed in the early months of this year. When I announced my published book to the students and gave them motivation via weekly e-newsletter, several days later I got a surprised email from her; informing that she got my book in e-book version bought via Xlibris and began to read it. I could read how excited she was via her email. She read everytime she had a chance in her morning/afternoon/evening tea at her house. But because of her busy work schedule--she used to travel everywhere as a government staff and dealing with many important education rules in Indonesia, she wasn't able to continue reading my book in several months.

Last week she kept her promise by sending me her pictures after long visit to Africa, and after that she had a duty to rearrange the rules of Indonesian Scouts and would be tested in public, then it would be brought to the nation conference in the near future before government gives the agreement for the new Scouts Rules that would be applied soon in Indonesia. She said her tight schedules will end in this month and hopefully she will be able to continue reading my book.

Although she has read until chapter 13, she has had a thought for my book. Below I attach what she has sent to me via email in Indonesian:

" . . . dari bab 1 sampai bab 13 saya melihat ada pesan yg ingin disampaikan oleh penulis kepada pembacanya, yaitu pesistensi (persistent) yang didasari oleh rasa antusias, maka apapun pekerjaan atau mimpi yg paling mustahil pun akan dapat dicapai."

It means: my story describes that persistence based on enthusiasm will make every effort or dream reached although we think it is impossible.

Thank you, Henny for your nice pictures. I have saved them in my special file and will appear in my Enthusiasm photo collage.

And this post is written special for her who is celebrating her Birthday today. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Henny!! May God bless you in everything you do. Amen.

If you would like to purchase Enthusiasm in e-book format, you can get it through Xlibris (e-Pub), Amazon (Kindle), BN (Nook) and Reader Store (Sony). Amazon has a great news. If you don't have Kindle, you can download FREE Kindle Reading Application for your PC, iPhone, Mac, BlackBerry, iPad and Android. Visit this link for detail info.

Happy Reading!!!

A THOUGHT: Mary Had A Little Lamb

This morning I got an email forwarded from a friend, Tresia. It was interesting and had deep thought for christianity life as I attach its picture below with its message. Let me know what do you think.
When the first time I came to US and knew that education in this country doesn't give the religion lesson to the students, I asked to my future husband (my husband now), why? I knew most people in this country are christian and I was interested to know the answer. He said that US government devided the secular and religion educations. "Oh . . ." that was only my response without any comment.

Several years living in US and finally I had my first baby in 2004. Three years later I was glad finding a private christian pre-school. With a small tuition fee they offered, we both dealed to bring our daughter to that school. In two years I saw many improvement in my daughter's christianity life. She prayed and remembered many bible verses as I knew they used to pray before starting the class. That was awesome for 3-4 years old child doing it. She had good manner and never mentioned the unpropriate words.

Last year when we brought her to a public school (Kindergrten class), in several months I saw something different on her. She begun mentioning the unpropriate words and I asked where those words came from. She was quiet--didn't answer my question--and never mentioned those words again after my husband and I warned her. But who knew, she went to school and studied with around +20 students and with only 1 teacher. And then I signed to involve in her class as a volunteer, teaching for the kid's writing class. From there, I finally knew how the situation of her class--very different with a private (christian) school she ever went.

In christmas last year, she told me that one of her friends didn't know about Jesus at all but his family celebrated Christmas even he was excited that Christmas would come soon. What a sad situation!!! I thought probably every teacher in their school also never told them what Christmas was about and they just celebrated the Christmas without trying to teach them whom the person they were celebrating for.

Thanks God! Since the first time she went to school (three years old) my eyes kept on her and never forgot to always ask her saying prayer before going to school or other places and before going to sleep or having dinner/lunch together with whole family members. This seems small things but I believe it will give big influence in her life for the future. If in the school she doesn't get any religion atmosphere, then church and family will play the role of this case. I thank God knowing I came from a strong christian family in Indonesia (and got religion lesson from ES to college as a main lesson) and from there I can teach my children to always remember every blessing they get from HIM with a small action--praying. It doesn't mean I like to pray or not, but praying should be an atmosphere in every christian life and family.

Please, share your thought here by writing a comment in this post.

Thank you and GBU!!!

NOVEL ENTHUSIASM: Review Contest Winner 2010

Dear All,

Today is the second day, Enthusisam is participating in California Book Trade Show in Oakland, California. It has been great to bring Enthusiasm travelled around the cities and countries, from Indonesia, China to Germany, from New York to Oregon and California. And I hope Enthusiasm will participate more in Pennsylvania through several events besides Book Signing.

As a short info, I visited Amazon this morning. The biggest discount (54%) has been out after Enthusiasm was sold (2 paperbacks were left) and now they are having a new stock and the discount has been decreased from 54% to 10%. I don't want you to miss this special discount anymore, so please, keep your eyes to visit there and let me know if you have sent a review at Amazon or any places/media you have sent, so I will link your review at Abbottsbooks.com

For all Review Contest participants, thank you for your patience in waiting the announcement of the winner. I need to re-inform that all of your reviews will be proposed to enclose in my book in Indonesian version that will be published next year in Indonesia. The publisher would probably choose which part of your review will appear on the back cover or special page of the praises from my readers or professional media. Special for the winner, his/her review will appear at my online media kit and linked at Abbottsbooks.com. As the participants in this contest, I also will send an Enthusiasm calender magnet 2011 for each contestant to their home address.

After I read all the entries and valued them as I ever wrote last week about Review Contest Flash, I have found two reviews that got the higher scores. Those two reviews were written by Viviana from Malaysia and Heni from Indonesia. Below is the short flash to know how they both had worked during the process of writing their reviews.

Viviana bought my book directly from me because she wanted to have my own autograph attached on the book and would keep it as her memorabilia of our friendship although we never meet in person. She is the first person who sent her review via email in English and then she sent it to KabarIndonesia after it got some inputs, reedited and had been translated in Indonesian. After I shared it at FB, I got an interest and invitation from Jawaban.com to send her review to their media. I was honored getting their invitation and proud of her work. Her short review also can be read at Amazon by using my husband account. She has been inspired and motivated by my story and wished one day she could write her own story about her own online business. Congrats, Viviana! I wish one day your dream will come true.

Heni is the fourth person who sent her review via email in Indonesian. She borrowed Enthusiasm coincidently from her co-worker who came from China. Her co-worker got my book as a present from her boyfriend and brought it during her business visit in Indonesia. She was able to read my book in two days. My book had given her a huge motivation to write. Then I challenged her to write a review. She tried to send it to one of the most prestigious magazines in Indonesia, Gatra. It was a pity, they didn't accept novel review, then she tried sending it to one of the most popular daily newspapers in Indonesia, Jawa Pos. After several approaches, she got an answer that she had to re-edit her review. Through several inputs and supports she got, finally she could change her review and resent it again. An answer from an Editor said that they would re-edit again and publish it after Eid. Now she is waiting for that good news.

From the two participants above, I have reread and compared with all parameters I've mentioned before. The result is the review that has collected most of the criterias I asked will be chosen as a winner. It was written by Heni from Indonesia. Congratulations Heni! As a winner, she will get a copy of my recent cookbook; The Second Book of Amerindo Kitchen in Series entitled Tumpeng, An Authentic Indonesian Food and an Enthusiasm pen. Special for Runner Up, Viviana, I will send her an e-book of Tumpeng (the same cookbook) in a CD. Congratulations Viviana!

If you're interested to read several pages of my second cookbook, you can visit this link and if you're interested to know detail about it, you're pleased to visit Abbottsbooks.com and read an interview about my cookbook, Tumpeng.

If you're interested to get my cookbooks in a CD, please let me know, you just need to pay US $5 for each cookbook and the cost of shipping and handling (not more than US $3 for outside US and US $2 for US residence). Fifty percents of the revenue will be donated to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Unreached Children Program. If you want to pay via Paypal or credit card via Paypal, click this symbol below and you're ready to pay in a secure payment.

Once again, thank you to all participants. All of you were rock and I had seen how enthusiastic all of you in reading Enthusiasm and participating in this contest.

Thank you for your support to make Enthusiasm become brighter and brighter. See you in the next upcoming writing contest!

Introducing Yeshua by Author Stan I.S. Law

Facebook has given me many advantages. Besides I can meet and connect with my old friends and family in Indonesia, I also get many new friends from around the world. Several weeks ago someone wanted me to be his friend. Before I approved him, I read his profile info and I was glad. He is a writer with a pen-name Stan I.S. Law who has written 20 books. It was the first time I heard his pen-name so I thought I was a lucky person to have a friend who has the same interest in writing.

Last week I was excited getting an invitation to have his free e-book, one of his novels entitled Yeshua, Personal Memoir of the Missing Years of Jesus. I was between "yes" or "no" to accept his offering because of so many tasks I had to do. And still I'm having project right now; translating my novel from English to Indonesian and several online tasks I have to do everyday. But then I was thinking, what a wonderful to accept an invitation from a great writer, especially this book seems interesting and also it would be the first time for me to read a historical fiction.

Here is the description about Yeshua:

"The novel is based on a statement by Edgar Cayce, the late American prophet, that Jesus had visited "Persia, India, Syria and Egypt to complete His education." The author has thoroughly researched early Indian and Middle-Eastern history. He illustrates conditions in which such an education might have taken place to prepare Jesus for his ministry. As the story unfolds, Satia, the son of a wealthy caravan owner, meets the 12-year-old Yeshua (Jesus) as the latter flees in rebellion from his Essene teachers. The two become fast friends and stay that way for the 18 years not covered in the Bible - the years between the finding of Jesus in the Temple and the beginning of his short ministry. In addition to several novels, Law has written other books under his own name, Stanislaw Kapuscinski, which cover esoteric topics such as the Key to Immortality, Visualization, and The Dictionary of Biblical Symbolism."

After several days in waiting, this morning I decided to download it and read its Prologue. I was getting more excited to read the first chapter but then I had an idea to write this post.

If you're interested to know more about him, click this link and more about this book, please visit this link. It's also available in print at Amazon.

Thank you, Stan for your offering. I will write a review after I'm done reading the whole chapters. ***

NOVEL ENTHUSIASM: Photo Contest Winner 2010

Today is the time for me to announce a Photo Contest Winner. All three finalists will appear on the special pages with their comment or blog address and only a winner will get a special and exclusive 2011 Enthusiasm calender. Please remember, all photo contestants will also appear in an Enthusiasm photo collage for the calender and get Enthusiasm magnet/calender magnet and will be sent directly to their home address next month, in November before Thanksgiving Day.

After I compared all three photo contestants to the calender page application, I got the best one which I chose it as the WINNER OF ENTHUSIASM PHOTO CONTEST 2010. It is a photo sent by YUNITA from Indonesia. CONGRATULATIONS YUNITA!!!

I also would like to enclose her comment sent via email below. I'm very impressed reading her honest comment that she wrote in Indonesian. If you're interested, you can translate her comment using Google translation. Please copy her comment and click a link on the right side of this blog for the symbol of "Translation". Follow the direction, pick the language you will choose and paste her comment to a provided place:

A. Michener berjudul The Novel.

Please, stay tune for the Review Contest 2010 Finalists in the upcoming post and thank you for your patience following this blog and reading every recent post. Your attention is greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!!!

Don't forget to keep checking my book at Amazon. This morning I read they are giving the biggest discount: 50% off. Hurry up, if you want to purchase Enthusiasm for Thanksgiving or Christmas present. I think this is the very best deal to purchase it. Btw, now I'm curious, how will they pay my royalty, ha, ha ... !!!

NOVEL ENTHUSIASM: 2010 Review Contest Flash

Today is the first day of Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany. It is the biggest book fair in the world. I wonder how many people around the world come to this event. My book is there along with thousands of books from many other countries and I will see what happens without any push of additional marketing in there.

And this morning, I would like to talk about Enthusiasm Review Contest. Talking about Book Review, do you ever know what does it mean?

As the person who is involved in the online writing course, I think I need to share the basic info about Book Review in this special post for my Review Contestants.

Definition of A Book Review is a description, critical analysis, and an evaluation on the quality, meaning, and significance of a book, not a retelling. It should focus on the book's purpose, content, and authority. A critical book review is not a book report or a summary. It is a reaction paper in which strengths and weaknesses of the material are analyzed. It should include a statement of what the author has tried to do, evaluates how well (in the opinion of the reviewer) the author has succeeded, and presents evidence to support this evaluation. (The italic sentences shows that you don't have to do but if you can present them, it will make your review great).

Book Reviews are highly personal and reflect the opinions of the reviewer. A review can be as short as 50-100 words, or as long as 1500 words, depending on the purpose of the review.

Regarding of the Book Review information I got from LA Valley College Library in California, the standard procedures for writing book reviews are suggestions, not formulae that must be used.

1. Write a statement giving essential information about the book: title, author, first copyright date, type of book, general subject matter, price and ISBN (these information should be mentioned in the review by blogger, FB contestants, or it has been sent/published to/by online and printed media as I've mentioned in the review contest rules)

2. State the author’s purpose in writing the book. Sometimes authors state their purpose in the preface or the first chapter.

3. State the theme and the thesis of the book.

4. Explain the method of development-the way the author supports the thesis. Illustrate your remarks with specific references and quotations. In general, authors tend to use the following methods, exclusively or in combination.

a. Description: The author presents word-pictures of scenes and events by giving specific details that appeal to the five senses, or to the reader’s imagination. Description presents background and setting. Its primary purpose is to help the reader realize, through as many sensuous details as possible, the way things (and people) are, in the episodes being described.

b. Narration: The author tells the story of a series of events, usually presented in chronological order. In a novel however, chronological order may be violated for the sake of the plot. The emphasis in narration, in both fiction and non-fiction, is on the events. Narration tells what has happened. Its primary purpose is to tell a story.

c. Exposition: The author uses explanation and analysis to present a subject or to clarify an idea. Exposition presents the facts about a subject or an issue as clearly and impartially as possible. Its primary purpose is to explain.

d. Argument: The author uses the techniques of persuasion to establish the truth of a statement or to convince the reader of its falsity. The purpose is to persuade the reader to believe something and perhaps to act on that belief. Argument takes sides on an issue. Its primary purpose is to convince.

5. Evaluate the book for interest, accuracy, objectivity, importance, thoroughness, and usefulness to its intended audience. Show whether the author's main arguments are true. Respond to the author's opinions. What do you agree or disagree with? And why? Illustrate whether or not any conclusions drawn are derived logically from the evidence. Explore issues the book raises. What possibilities does the book suggest? What has the author omitted or what problems were left unsolved? What specific points are not convincing? Compare it with other books on similar subjects or other books by the same as well as different authors. Is it only a reworking of earlier books; a refutation of previous positions? Have newly uncovered sources justified a new approach by the author? Comment on parts of particular interest, and point out anything that seems to give the book literary merit. Relate the book to larger issues.

6. Try to find further information about the author - reputation, qualifications, influences, biographical, etc. - any information that is relevant to the book being reviewed and that would help to establish the author's authority. Can you discern any connections between the author's philosophy, life experience and the reviewed book?

7. If relevant, make note of the book's format - layout, binding, typography, etc. Are there maps, illustrations? Do they aid understanding?

8. Summarize (briefly), analyze, and comment on the book’s content. State your general conclusions. Pay particular attention to the author's concluding chapter. Is the summary convincing? List the principal topics, and briefly summarize the author’s ideas about these topics, main points, and conclusions. Use specific references and quotations to support your statements. If your thesis has been well argued, the conclusion should follow naturally. It can include a final assessment or simply restate your thesis. Do not introduce new material at this point.

Well, those eight procedures above sound complicated but I have applied those just for the students at the online writing course. You should not do all of them to review my book but at least you should remember a definition of Book Review. It is a description, critical analysis, and an evaluation on the quality, meaning, and significance of a book, not a retelling.

Because my book is non fiction that I present it in the Novel format, you should consider several things in reviewing my book: Characters, theme, plot, style, setting, and several factors I will mention below:
1. Does the book give a "full-length" picture of the subject?
2. What is the point of view of the author?
3. How is the subject matter organized: chronologically, retrospectively, etc.?
4. What source materials were used? (For examples for my book--Enthusiasm, I used journals, letters, blogs, etc.)

I hope the information above will give you many inputs in reviewing a book and make my book review contest recently as your praticing in writing a book review, and you can write much better for the next review contest of my next published books.

So . . . who is the winner? Please, stay tune!!!

Happy 8th Anniversary

This post is special for my husband. To celebrate our 8th Anniversary today, I would like to give him a special gift, an Anniversary Poem:

The Garden of Love

The beauty of our garden is always changing
With the weather and the season
They give a splendor in each moment
Viewing its beauty in its own way

In the spring, the Daffodils are blooming
In the summer, the Honeysuckles have party with the butterflies and hummingbirds
In the autumn, the backyard is decorated with the colorful leaves
In the winter, the plants are covered with the white snow

In the morning when sunshine is rising
All vegetations are ready to be filled
In the night when the moonlight is appearing
We still can't see the beauty of our garden in the dark

Rainy days, sunny days, snowy days and stormy days
Which the best day they will choose
They won't . . . they can't choose
They just can accept

The garden of our love is as same as our garden
Through rainy days and sunny days
Through snowy days and stormy days
We've stayed together as husband and wife

Happy anniversary, my dear husband
With you at my side in any of our condition
every experience is sweet
because we face it together
