College Preparation for My Daughter

The beginning of high school last year was an exciting time for me and my daughter. She might be adjusting to a new school, making new friends and becoming more independent. Of course, she was little bit nervous and needed my help and involvement. As an immigrant parent, I never stop learning. Besides she learns, I learn, too. I learn how the school system is, how to prepare for college, read many useful educational sources, etc.

Thank you Chester County Futures who has introduced my 9th grade daughter about CollegeBoard. As a parent, I will always get forwarded messages every time they send a message to her. I read and learn a lot from their Website. Here are some tips for 9th grade students from CollegeBoard that we both can do together to succeed this year as she wants to continue studying at a college/university after high school.

Summer Before High School
  • Visit a college campus together. It’s a great way to get your child excited about college. Learn more about how you and your child can prepare for a campus visit. (Not yet)
  • Get the facts about what college costs. You may be surprised at how affordable higher education can be. Start by reading Understanding College Costs. (Done this spring, 2019)
  • Show your child how to explore career ideas. He or she can make a list of interests, talents and favorite activities and start matching them with occupations. Learn more about how your child can complete a career worksheet. (She did at school, but I need her to do it again with me this summer, 2019)
  • Come up with fun reading ideas. Look for magazines or newspapers your child may like and talk about the books you loved reading when you were your child’s age. If your family makes reading enjoyable, it can become a daily habit. (Done. She read almost everyday)
Fall
  • Make sure your child meets with the school counselor. Your child should schedule a meeting to talk about college and career options and to choose the most-appropriate classes. Learn more about the high school counselor's role (It's in the progress, step by step).
  • Help your child set goals for the school year. Working toward specific goals helps your child stay motivated and focused (It's in the progress, step by step).
  • Make a plan to check in regularly about schoolwork. If you keep up with your child's tests, papers and homework assignments, you can celebrate successes and head off problems as a team. Get homework tips for your child (Honestly, I never check her schoolwork. She has been independent doing her schoolwork without my help and my regular check since she was in 4th grade. She just comes to me and asks questions if she doesn't know the answers. She always tells and shows me what scores she gets in her tests/quizzes without I ask. Believe or not, her report card none of them below than 98 in the middle school and none of them below than 95 in the high school. Thank you God for this special kid).
  • Talk about extracurricular activities. Getting involved in clubs and other groups is a great way for your child to identify interests and feel more engaged in school. Read more about the benefits of extracurriculars (She is an active student. She ever got involved in tennis last fall. The active extracurricular activities she has now from her school are Orchestra, Honor Society, Chester County Futures, and Spanish Club; and several activities from outside her school are Girl Scouts, Game Changers, her quartet group, and Confirmation Class. So, you know how busy I am).
Winter
  • Start thinking about financial aid. It’s not too early to look into types of aid that could help you cover college costs. Start by reading 7 Things You Need to Know About Financial Aid (I have learned a lot from many sources and College/University Websites, including from CollegeBoard, and shared some to my daughter. I also involve her to participate in saving some money for her college by working in the summer time--even though it's just small money for applying her college registration as for an example. This has a purpose: through this way, she will appreciate every effort she makes, and her parent's efforts to make her wish come true).
  • Discuss next year’s classes. Make sure your child is challenging him- or herself — and taking the courses college admission officers expect to see. Learn more about the high school classes that colleges look for (She took reading and writing tests, and she passed for taking dual enrollment classes. In fall this year, she will attend Delaware County Community College for free, without paying anything, including books and transportation. She also plans to take an AP class at her school besides honor classes. All these are good for her profile to build a better and outstanding college resume).
Spring
  • Help your child start a college list. Visit College Search Step-by-Step together to get tips on starting a college search and figuring out what matters most to your child when choosing a college. (We will do it together after the school ends this spring)
  • See how much you need to save for college. Use the College Savings Calculator  to get an idea of where you are compared with your savings goal (This is the most challenging part. We are still working on this. Her goal is getting several or some scholarships--any kind of scholarships).
  • Help your child make summer plans. Summer is a great time to explore interests and learn new skills — and colleges look for students who pursue meaningful summer activities. Find out ways your child can stay motivated this summer (She has been accepted to participate again in Summer ServiceCorps. This will be the second year. She will learn about leadership and communication skills besides earning money by working at the provided work-site).

My Daughter Wants to be a Polyglot

My daughter came to me and said, "Ibu (Mom), I wanna be a polyglot. I want to be fluent in Indonesian, very good in Spanish, and good in Japanese besides my native language in English. I also want to learn French."

I responded her, "You can do it, honey, because you learn Indonesian from me, learn Spanish at school, and learn Japanese online by yourself. As you are at least good in Spanish, you can learn French because those languages are almost same."

I am so proud of her as we know in the USA so many colleges drop the foreign language programs and it is dangerous for next generations and national security, especially if they are the leaders. If you are a leader, at least you can speak one foreign language. In Indonesia all students must learn English from ES to College, so you won't be so surprised if many students in Indonesia speak English very well.

If you are able to speak more than a language besides your native language, you will have more job opportunities than others who don't have.

I myself, besides my native language in Indonesian, my other native language is Javanese Ngoko in Surabaya dialect. I am good in Javanese Kromo (most used by people who live in Java villages), and fair in Javanese Kromo Inggil (used by old-Java people or Kingdom environment). I also can read and write Javanese letters well.

Besides English is my second language, I ever learned French for over two years and reached Intermediate class. My friends and I could not continue to Advance class because we didn't have any available instructors to teach us at French Consulate in Surabaya at that time. Language is like muscle. If we don't use it, we cannot speak it. So, I forget most of French now. Only common words/sentences that I still remember. If I learn French again, it won't be very difficult because of what I had learned before.

Speaking about foreign languages, do you know that most people who only speak a language are from United States and British? Do you know, why? Most countries learn English because English is number one top international language, so the people in the USA and British feel they don't need to learn other languages. I wrote this based on what I read from national/international surveys and articles.

By the way, I read this interesting article titled A True National Security Threat--Foreign Language Programs Disappearing, written by Dan Hamilton, a professor at Johns Hopkins University and dean of Waldsee German Language Village, a program of Concordia Language Villages. What he wrote is true and I agree with him. I am so happy and honored because I am one of those who get an opportunity to contribute the Nation as an Indonesian language instructor for the most prestigious US military.

God bless me, God bless America, and God bless Indonesia! Amen!

A Letter for Representative Harry Lewis Jr.

Representative Harry Lewis Jr.
315 West First Avenue
Parkesburg, 19365

Dear Mr. Lewis Jr.,

Two weeks ago I read Chescobus Public Notice. It mentions the City of Coatesville eliminated their financial support of the Coatesville LINK in March 2015. The City's elimination of their financial support requires that alternative local funding sources be secured from businesses and municipalities along the LINK service area. If alternative funding sources are not found, the Transportation Management Association of Chester County (TMACC) will be forced to drastically reduce Coatesville LINK service as soon as July 2015.

This service is very important to me and many Walmart associates who live in Coatesville and Parkesburg. I believe there are many people also use this service to go to their work located along Route 30 or wherever the bus passes the companies they work at. Because of how vital this service is to me and the surrounding community, maybe there is a chance from you to help us to partner with TMACC to find local, sustainable match funding sources.

I appreciate your consideration to find a solution for this letter.

Sincerely,
(Your name)
(Your employer name) Associate, (city, PA)

**************************************************************************
I wrote that letter above yesterday morning before going to work and sent it in the afternoon. If you, your family, your friends or any other people you know who live in Coatesville or Parkesburg, PA and often go to work, Lancaster General Hospital or other places by Chescobus (Coatesville LINK), you can also send the similar letter or call Representative Harry Lewis Jr. at 610-857-2145 or contact Coatesville City Council and your municipal, Chester County and State elected officials. Tell them how vital the Coatesville LINK is to you and your community, and urge them to partner with TMACC to find local, sustainable match funding sources.

"Enthusiasm" in Indonesian Version: Congrats to Ruth (Indonesia), Viviana (Malaysia) and Writer's Digest (USA)

Dear my fellow readers,

How are you doing? I hope you all are doing well. I have been busy since last month, from guiding the online writing course to the new students, preparing the news of my book online since it was released and adapting with my new work schedules. I have been so exhausted sometimes but then it would bring me to know better how God blessing come through those. I learned to thank Him in many ways in my busy time, my exhausted time, my hard time, etc. Learning to thank Him in those conditions are not easy as we know we will be so easy to thank Him without pressure when we are in happy condition.

I have been so excited every time I announce the news about my book from publisher to my FB wall. Thank you to everybody who have given comments, been liking it, and re-shared to their walls.

The front and back covers of my book, Antusiasme (Enthusiasm) have been most on the groups' wall I'm joining. Feel free if you have any question regarding this book. Last week I heard from my publisher that they were getting 75 orders from Gramedia's book stores branches from Jakarta (including other cities in West Java: Bandung, Bogor, etc), Middle Java (Yogyakarta, etc), East Java (Surabaya, etc) till out of Java ((Medan, Padang, Balikpapan, Samarinda, Makasar, Bali, etc).  You will find it there around 2-4 weeks from last Friday but now you can find it in Jakarta and other cities around it. The cities in East Indonesia (NTT, NTB and Irian Jaya) aren't included, so if you live in those territorials and are interested to read it, you should order directly from my publisher.

Talking about my book covers, I enclose the very large size of back cover picture below, showing three book endorsements. CONGRATULATIONS to Ruth Dian Purnamasari (Indonesia), Viviana Widjaja (Malaysia) and Writer's Digest (USA) whom YKBK (my publisher) have chosen from teens endorsements I proposed.

Guys, please, feel free to let me know if you have found my book at Gramedia book stores. I also would be happy to receive the picture of you along with my book. It would be great and helps me to complete my photo album. I would be so excited to see it. (*)

Hurricane Tracker

Since yesterday, at work some friends were talking most about Hurricane that would hit our area on Saturday and Sunday (today and tomorrow). I was curious about this news so I searched at MSN.com and found HURRICANE TRACKER.

According to the news I read: Hurricane Irene battered the North Carolina coast with wind and rain Saturday, wreaking havoc as it began a potentially catastrophic run up the U.S. East Coast. Irene was moving north-northeast along the coast and was expected to remain a hurricane as it hit the mid-Atlantic states on Saturday night and New England on Sunday.

With winds of 85 miles per hour, Irene was a Category 1 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson intensity scale. Forecasters warned that it remained a large and dangerous storm and that its wind-strength was holding steady at 85 mph.

As of 11 a.m., tropical storm conditions had spread into coastal Va., Md., and Del., demonstrating the unusually large size of the storm.

New York City ordered unprecedented evacuations and transit shutdowns as states from the Carolina to Maine declared emergencies due to Irene, whose nearly 600 mile width guaranteed a stormy weekend for tens of millions of people. (MSN News)

If I checked from HURRICANE TRACKER, it seemed my area would be hit from Saturday evening/night to Sunday morning as the effect of it and it's called the tropical storm. Since in the morning, I have prepared everything. I made sure nothing left at the front porch/house, and cleaned and arranged the garage so my car would have a place to park in, meanwhile the other car is still getting repair since two weeks ago.

While I'm writing this post, the weather outside has been cloudy since I woke up in the morning. I'm waiting for my husband go home from work and I'm not sure I'll come to work this evening or not. If the rain and windy have started before I leave, I think I prefer to call off from work and stay at home.

Below I attached a video, showing the hurricane is hitting North Carolina. (*)

NEW YEAR REFLECTION (9): Enhance Your Knowledge

My little daughter told me she wanted to be a song writer, an art and music teacher. I responded her that she had to be able to play at least an instrument. Since that time she played keyboard more frequently than before and planned to take special music class when she is in the 3rd grade at her school.

What do you want to be in the next several years? Whatever you want to be, enhancing your knowledge is a must but sometimes you don't need to spend a lot of money for that. For an example: if you would like to improve your writing project, you might be interested to join in the writing community instead of a writing class that will take you more time and cost. In the writing community used to take lower cost and you will get many reviews for your writing project.

Well, talking about improving your skill in the writing field, I have an information that might be useful for Indonesians. PMOH (Pelatihan Menulis Online HOKI), an online writing course still open registration until February 19, 2011 at 12 midnight (Western Indonesia Standard Time). PMOH in this third year has opened two classes: General Class (15 weeks) and Fiction Class (6 weeks).

Since two last years, PMOH has graduated the students from General Class. They are from Senior High School student, college students, translator, teacher, housewives, government employee, private employees, entrepreneurs, editor, photographer, etc as you see the slideshow below (several of them are PMOH mentors).

For more information about PMOH, visit this link or you can send your questions via email to redaksi@kabarindonesia.com with the subject name: PMOH.

You also may forward this information to your Indonesian friends and family who have interest in improving their writing skill wherever they live.

Thank you for reading and forward this message. Have a great day, everyone!

NOVEL ENTHUSIASM: First Buyer and First Reader

What a great thing to be an author, especially if you're a fresh new author? As I am as a fresh new author, the great thing is if I have enthusiastic readers who are eagerly wanting to read my book.

Both pictures above were sent last weekend by Henny from Jakarta, Indonesia. She was an ex-student of the online writing course I managed in the early months of this year. When I announced my published book to the students and gave them motivation via weekly e-newsletter, several days later I got a surprised email from her; informing that she got my book in e-book version bought via Xlibris and began to read it. I could read how excited she was via her email. She read everytime she had a chance in her morning/afternoon/evening tea at her house. But because of her busy work schedule--she used to travel everywhere as a government staff and dealing with many important education rules in Indonesia, she wasn't able to continue reading my book in several months.

Last week she kept her promise by sending me her pictures after long visit to Africa, and after that she had a duty to rearrange the rules of Indonesian Scouts and would be tested in public, then it would be brought to the nation conference in the near future before government gives the agreement for the new Scouts Rules that would be applied soon in Indonesia. She said her tight schedules will end in this month and hopefully she will be able to continue reading my book.

Although she has read until chapter 13, she has had a thought for my book. Below I attach what she has sent to me via email in Indonesian:

" . . . dari bab 1 sampai bab 13 saya melihat ada pesan yg ingin disampaikan oleh penulis kepada pembacanya, yaitu pesistensi (persistent) yang didasari oleh rasa antusias, maka apapun pekerjaan atau mimpi yg paling mustahil pun akan dapat dicapai."

It means: my story describes that persistence based on enthusiasm will make every effort or dream reached although we think it is impossible.

Thank you, Henny for your nice pictures. I have saved them in my special file and will appear in my Enthusiasm photo collage.

And this post is written special for her who is celebrating her Birthday today. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Henny!! May God bless you in everything you do. Amen.

If you would like to purchase Enthusiasm in e-book format, you can get it through Xlibris (e-Pub), Amazon (Kindle), BN (Nook) and Reader Store (Sony). Amazon has a great news. If you don't have Kindle, you can download FREE Kindle Reading Application for your PC, iPhone, Mac, BlackBerry, iPad and Android. Visit this link for detail info.

Happy Reading!!!
